At Colorado Water Polo
We Strive To:
- Create a fun, supportive, and challenging atmosphere for athletes of all ages and abilities to learn water polo
- Develop individual skills
- Teach team play and strategies
- Compete successfully on a State, Regional, and National level
- Prepare athletes for collegiate play
Practice Groups and Team Structure
All of our age group practices are co-ed, with both boys and girls playing with one another during practices to develop more skills and challenge one another. For competitions, older athletes begin playing in boys or girls divisions for most club-level competitions, with some local exceptions. Our practices are split by age group and skill level. More information below:
- Swabbies
- Our youngest athletes focus on developing confidence in swimming, treading, and ball-handling skills
- Generally, athletes in this age group fall between 7 and 10 years old
- This age group is eligible to compete in tournaments with 10U age groups
- Gunners
- This group focuses on understanding defensive and offensive technical skills, as well as making reads and decisions in line with team tactics
- Generally, athletes in this group are 11-12 years old
- This age group competes in local and regional competitions
- Boatswains
- This group focuses on understanding defensive and offensive technical skills, as well as making reads and decisions in line with team tactics
- Athletes will also work more on technical skills that apply to specific positions
- Generally, athletes in this age group are 13-15 years old, with new high school athletes of all ages practicing with this group as well
- Quartermasters
- This group focuses on applying their individual skills to team tactics in all areas of the game
- This group encompasses athletes who are serious about playing in high-level competitions at the Regional and National levels
- Generally, athletes in this age group are 15 and older, with some exceptions

Swabbies 6:30-8:00pm @ Hinkley
Gunners 6:30-8:30pm @ Hinkley
Boatswains 6:45-8:30pm @ Hinkley
Quartermasters 6:45-8:30pm @ Hinkley
Saturdays:
Swabbies and Gunners 12-2pm @ Hinkley
Scrimmage
Sundays:
Gunners/Boatswains/Quartermasters 1:00-3:00pm @ Broomfield Community Center
Swim Conditioning:
Ask about our partnerships with Colorado Blue (Northeast Denver/Aurora) and FORM (Southeast Aurora/Centennial)
Our water polo athletes receive reduced rates to practice with these swim teams.
